Set a timer, start a fight. Every time.

In our house, the longest part of any timer is after it goes off. PlanetLoopTimer makes the break something the kid launches himself — a planet around the sun, no number draining against his will — so when it ends, it's an ending he actually had a hand in. My standard line went from "time's up" to "Mercury or Neptune?", and the fighting mostly stopped.

"Five more minutes of the game."

"That was five minutes ago."

"I can't save here."

"Okay, when you can save."

(fifteen minutes later)

"Did you save? Bed, now."

"One more boss. Just one, I swear."

This exact script is fully load-bearing in our house at this point.

"I set a timer, you stop when it goes off" — I believed in that for a while. He doesn't stop. The stretch after the timer is longer than the timer. Before it goes off, it's quiet. The second it beeps, the negotiating starts. That "longer after than before" thing — if you know, you know.

One day it hit me: he doesn't actually agree with the number on the timer.

A regular timer is a machine that drains on its own

Think about what a timer actually is.

From the kid's side, that's being chased by a clock he isn't driving. Before it's a willpower or patience thing, there's just "time I'm not the main character of" running in the background. A little resentment riding on that is, honestly, kind of fair.

Flip it around and the "five more minutes" stall reads differently — it's him trying to take his will back from the clock.

Once I saw it that way, "just make the alarm louder" was obviously not the fix. It needed a different build.

So — what if you launch the time yourself?

PlanetLoopTimer, the app we make, came out of exactly that.

The break time is something the kid launches himself, as a planet.

On the launch screen, a guide line shows the angle and the power. You pick your moment, "right about here," and let it go; the planet starts looping around the sun.

Launch it well, it orbits a long time. Botch it, it drops into the sun fast and the break is short. So the length of the break isn't up to an alarm — it's up to his own hands.

That alone changed something in him. Not "the five-minute timer went off" but "the planet I launched got pulled into the sun." Same ending, but the second one is a lot easier to accept.

The sun's gravity, as a way of showing it

As the target time gets close, the sun's gravity slowly reels the planet in, and it spirals down.

So instead of a flat "beep beep," you get "oh, it's about to get pulled in" — visible, on screen, ahead of time. That part quietly matters.

A normal timer is "tons of time left" for five straight minutes, then suddenly "done" in the last second. That's an ambush for the brain, and people — kids and adults — are bad at ambushes. The planet version shows the stages: it slows, it enters the spiral, it gets pulled in. You get to brace.

All it's really doing is swapping a plain countdown for a "the distance is closing" picture. But that swap alone changes how it feels.

Mercury to Neptune — distance sets the time

Each planet has a different orbit size, so you can change roughly how long the break runs.

"Quick breather" is Mercury, "one chapter of a book" is Mars — you pick the planet by the job.

The strange part: in his head, "Mercury" feels less heavy than "a 5-minute timer," even when it's the same length. Probably because he's seeing the time as a thing, not as a number.

Pluto is the ∞ challenge

As a bonus, Pluto has weak gravity, so as long as the orbit lines up, it just keeps looping.

Not really a break — purely a "longest record" game mode.

Having that makes "opening the timer app" a little fun on its own. After a normal break he'll ask, on his own, "can I try Pluto?" — so I don't have to say "go set a timer," he comes to open it himself.

Capping a break with a little launch game also made the switch back to homework easier. Nice side effect.

"Launch it" instead of "knock it off"

Regular nagging tends to go like this.

"Time's up." "Wrap it up." "You said one more minute."

We said all of those, daily. Saying them wears both sides out.

After switching to PlanetLoopTimer, the words coming out of my mouth changed.

"Mercury, or Neptune?"

That's it, and there's nothing to fight about. He picks, he launches, his own hands set the time. The stuff we used to fight over kind of evaporates.

Changing the timer made the air in the house a little lighter. Not dramatic. But it's an every-single-day thing, so. That's where we're at.
